hello all,
I will be in San Diego for a convention Monday - Thursday.
Was thinking to take the family (total of 3) to Legoland on Sunday, and Sea World on Friday, before heading back home on Saturday.

We'll be staying at a hotel between Horton Plaza & Civic Center on 2nd Ave, w/o a rental car.

Is it pretty safe for my wife & kid to walk around by themselves while I go to the convention?
Is there any bad neighborhood in that general area that we need to stay away from?

What's the best way to go from hotel to Legoland & Sea World?
Taxi, shuttle, or something else?
Any good seafood, or Chinese/Taiwanese restaurant in that area that the locals favor?

TIA

Legoland is worth the visit especially if you have kids, but it is going to be very difficult for you to get there without a car. It is about 45 miles north from downtown San Diego. It is just to the east of the 5. I'm not sure if mass transit would be an option. You might be able to take the Coaster (train) from downtown to Carlsbad and then catch a bus or cab to Legoland. I bet someone else on this forum might know.

I don't really care to much for Seaworld anymore....not so much because of the Blackfish or PETA stuff but just because I find it boring. If you did want to go though it would be another hard place to get without a car. There is probably a bus you could take but it would take a while. Sea World is about 7 miles north of downtown where the 5 and 8 intersect.

San Diego is set up for cars. Mass transit it horrible and we like it that way....we love our cars.

Have you considered the San Diego Zoo? It really is the crown jewel of San Diego and also attached to Balboa Park, which is a great destination as well. You could take a cab from your hotel and be there in less than 15 minutes.

I think it is safe for them to walk around in that area. There are lots of business people on the street but there are lots of homeless as well. Plenty of cops. Lots of tourist like yourself.

I like Pt Loma Seafoods. It is, obviously, in Pt Loma, which is by the airport.

There is also a pretty good children's museum in downtown that your wife & kid might like while you're at the convention. And it may be worthwhile to rent a car for a couple of days; you could take in Legoland, which is definitely worth it for kids, & the Wild Animal Park, which is similar to the zoo, but the animals are in a more natural, spread-out setting. As stated, mass transit in SD isn't great for tourists.

Thank you both for the info.

So far we've been enjoying the area, w/ the exception of being rattled by a few homeless guys who don't seem to have their minds together, and a tricycle taxi cabbie that robbed us. (said the quote he gave initially was per person, so had to pay 3x what I thought was the agreed upon fare)

I bet you are here for the Cisco Live Convention. I was Downtown yesterday and it appears it has been taken over by engineers and IT professionals, (mainly middle age dudes ), kudos for bringing your family.

Have them visit Old Town, since you are without a rent-a-car, I would ride the green line trolley. Its a fun touristy spot to visit and its only about 4-5 stops North of downtown.

Also, take your family to go see the Aerosmith concert at Petco.

^^Old Town is a good idea, it's pleasant there. You could eat at the Old Town Mexican Cafe.

....or also OP can walk to the bay from Civic Center area and catch the ferry to Coronado Island. Walk around on that side of the Bay and even catch a quick cab ride to Coronado Beach and back if they wish.

When staying downtown, its the easiest beach to get to without a car. It's too bad there are no Decobike stations on Coronado.

Yes, he's here for the Cisco Live 2015 convention. It's taken over the entire convention center, the outside of the convention center, and all of the hotels in the area. Some of the attendees are staying hotels in Coronado, because everything in the area was booked in advance. Tomorrow is the last day, so people will be leaving town. The Aerosmith concert isn't open for all of the attendees, only those who paid extra (in advance) to see the show.

I've been working there, and it's just crazy, but not as crazy as CC.
