I can't think of anything within 10 miles of Poway that isn't safe. And there are lots of families in Poway and all around it, so that sounds like it would be grandkid friendly.

Scripps Ranch is close to Poway.

Scripps Ranch is very nice.

It's all houses though, few apartments.

I heard Poway was dangerous but that could be wrong.

You're the same guy who, in another thread, heard that Poway schools weren't all that good. Did you grow up in the same San Diego that we're living in?

Poway is not dangerous, and Poway schools are among the best. What you need to be careful of with respect to Poway is a stunningly horrible bond they put through to get funding for the schools, that will cost the citizens of Poway big-time in the end.

You almost can't go wrong in that whole area ... Poway, Rancho Bernardo, Scripps Ranch. They are all nice and family-friendly. There are only a couple of pockets in Poway that are a little run down.

If you want some really ridiculous, over-simplified differences, then I'd say Scripps Ranch might be considered a little newer, so the apartments and condos there might be a little more expensive. Rancho Bernardo skews a little older ... there are several retirement communities there. And Poway is more middle-of-the-road families.

Other worthy options:

Sabre Springs (next to Poway and North of Scripps Ranch) is also worth a look
Rancho Penasquitos (across the I-15 from Poway and North of Mira Mesa)
Carmel Mountain (further northwest of Poway, along the I-15 fwy and south of Rancho Bernardo)
4-S Ranch (across the I-15 and further west of Rancho Bernardo)

That would be Carmel Mountain Ranch. (There is a geographic feature named Carmel Mountain, and it's along Hwy 56 between Carmel Valley and Rancho Penasquitos.)
