Looking to get a home in a nice neighborhood in northern Escondido, west of the 15, north of the 78. Commute would be west on the 78 every morning around 6:45am to HWY 5, then north to the base. Traveling the opposite direction around 4:30pm.

How bad is the commute on the 78? Will I be drive every day terrified of someone slamming into my expensive new truck?

Well it has been some years since I drove it as you are asking about, but probably a 45 minute drive in traffic. A 6:45 start may reduce that a nice bit. It is about a 20 mile drive depending on how close to the beginning of the 78 you are in Escondido.

At 6:45 it isn't so bad, but you're even better off if you just start 15 minutes earlier.

I usually skip the highway and take some of the other roads that head in the same direction, but I don't have to go up the 5 every morning.

Owl is right...start a bit earlier to beat the traffic, and hope that no idiot has decided to take a sudden detour into the median or shoulder and flipped their car.

You need to go in the San Luis Rey entrance?

If so...I'd also know my way around surface streets.

76 can get pretty packed too, but there's always a way around things if you're creative.

The 78 has gotten much worse in the last couple of years. Depending on the time, now it's both sides that can get packed, just a few years ago it was only the East bound area around the 15 merge, and a bit at the O'side 5 merge.
