Will be visiting San Diego by car in May. What area is good to book a motel so we don't have to drive all the time and still get around. Thanks for any info.

Stay downtown. There is a very nice Sheraton in the Symphony building that has parking, is walkable to Gaslamp and the Bay, plus it's near a 5 onramp so you can take a drive.

I would pick "Hotel Circle" on the norh and south frontage roads next to Route 8, between Route 5 and Route 163. It's five minutes to downtown, five minutes to the beach at Ocean Beach ("Dog Beach" is fun), five minutes to Sea World Mission Beach and Mission Bay, and ten minutes to La Jolla.

Smile hacienda in old town

omg, it is the best hotel in the most convenient area of old town. park your car in their parking garage and walk everywhere you want to go!! the train to tiajuana is steps away, as is the old town trolley that takes you around town and tells you some of the history. its our favorite hotel in the world (haven't been around much!!!)
