I have just been "matched" for internship at a hospital in SD (in Balboa Park). I will be moving soon to start the internship. I would like to buy a house in the area, but I cant afford anything too expensive. Ideally, I would like to find a cheaper, trendier area to live in that is as close to Balboa Park as I can get. Any suggestions? Are there any areas to avoid? How far away can I live from Balboa Park before traffic becomes a major issue? I appreciate any feedback given!! Thanks.

You need to be more specific about your budget.

I would like to spend less than 300k for a house, if possible.

In that price range you are basically priced out of a detached home in San Diego. You can find condos, especially 1BR's in that price range within excellent commuting distance to Hillcrest in North Park, University Heights, Normal Heights.
