I am moving from St Louis this summer and trying to figure out a location to live. I travel a great deal, gone at least 60 percent of the year. I am 38 and single, looking to live near a beach. It needs to be safe to where my car can be parked for 3-4 weeks when I'm travelling. I would like to spend no more than 1300 on rent if possible. If not near beach then I would like to live near the mountains. So any suggestions, locations, etc would be appreciated. Thanks.

Well if you travel that long and just have your car parked people in the area will notice and might break in/steal your car.ESP in the beach cities like Mission,Pacific,Ocean Beach I'm sure something like that would happen. This is San Diego, one of the worst cities every year for auto crimes. How much are you willing to spend? If you got the money the North County areas near the beach or even Coronado should be good choices.

I'd like to not spend more than 1400 if possible. What about Point Loma? is there any city near the mountains if those beaches would have crime like that?

Since you travel so much, why not live downtown which is 5 minutes from the airport? While it isn't on the beach, you are across the bridge from Coronado Beach which is really nice and is less than 10 minutes away. I'm not sure what you mean by living near the mountains? Where they get snow? If so, you are looking at being an hour out of San Diego.

1400 a month will not get you what you are looking for. Living in the Beach Cities means you have to be ready to eventually get your car broken into. It has happened to most of us. I live at Mission Beach and I pay rent in the range you are looking at. I agree with the previous poster, you need to look in the North County for safer areas, but then you will find yourself in a higher rental range -- closer to 1800 a month.

Point Loma, the real Point Loma that is (near Cabrillo), is very expensive. You will need to be willing to pay more.

Also, what do you mean by "mountains." For the most part, San Diego is a series of mountains, mesas, and canyons. If you are refering to mountain towns like Alpine, then be ready to drive. You won't live in San Diego.
