This is an interesting study. It looked at how someone making $100,000 a year would net after expenses in 50 major cities.

Here's what San Diego looks like on average for someone making $100,000:

Federal income taxes: $17,262.50
Net pay after income taxes: $72,305.44
Annual rent: $32,700
Annual groceries: $3,798
Annual utilities: $1,600.56
Annual driving costs: $13,927
Annual healthcare: $7,203
Income leftover: $13,077

How does that compare to other cities? You can find out here: https://www.gobankingrates.com/makin...jor-cities/#47

Quick summary: A $100,000 salary goes farther here than the Bay area or Los Angeles, about the same as Washington, D.C., and not as far as in many other cities (including Sacramento and Fresno).

Thought I'd share this for people thinking about moving here from elsewhere so they can see how their current city might compare.

Seems about right but...
A single guy/gal renting seems a little high $2,725 a month. You can get in here at about $1600-$2000. Although Groceries seem too low $316.00 average monthly. Probably not eating out and definitely not eating healthy and chaining together multiple consecutive days of leftovers.

You can definitely impact the bottom line by being selective with the area you move to and its proximity to where you will work.

Interesting that it has a specific line item for fed income tax but not state income tax, given that fed should be the same (or close to it) while state can vary by a lot. At that income level, it could be a $6K swing.

They are including state and payroll taxes. They just didn't explicitly state the amounts in the article (they jump to net after tax).

$100k - $17.3k = $82.7k. How did we get to $72.3k?

Good points, eastcoast. I didn't look at the methodology for this study, but I'm guessing that they were basing rent on a family, not a single.

The math is off on purpose.

Yeap, my kid pays $1300 in the Bay Area. She can gets to SF through the BART.

I know.... it's just weird they would explicitly line-item fed tax (the same across all cities included) but not line item state and/or sales tax, which can vary by quite a bit.
