If I do relocate to SD (it's one possibility out of many at this point), I'll most likely be renting an apartment, but one of my main criteria is living somewhere aesthetically pleasing. I know there have been lots of questions about areas with good schools, areas good for young people, etc. But I want to know about the areas with the best looking homes and surroundings.

Which neighborhoods do you all think are best looking? I know it's subjective, but I just wanted to get some opinions. For the purposes of this question, since I'm just loosely browsing for ideas, lets pretend that all other factors are irrelevant.

Mission Hills, La Jolla near the ocean, Sunset Cliffs, Kensington, Hillcrest, Banker's Hill, Downtown all combine good environmental aesthetic and good home architecture to me.

Additionally,

University Heights, west of Maryland
University Heights, north of Adams (Panorama Drive)
Burlingame
South Park between 30th and the eastern edge of Balboa Park
Loma Portal, in the "Author" streets - but boy that airport sure is close!

These are all older areas, which is my aesthetic preference.

I third Mission Hills! It has early 19th century bungalows and some great shops to walk to. The downtown stretch is along Washington and Goldfinch, the neighborhood is north and south of Washington.

I just visited South Park for the first time on Dad's Day. Loved it.
