Great news now we need that thug maniac officer DAGES off of the force and charged with assault and harassment. La mesa pd is taking too long. I'm seeing office workers fired on the spot after racist post on FB. Why can a maniac like that get an investigation benefit of the doubt when he's supposed to be protecting citizens. These police unions have too much power

As a tax payer I've been saying that all along and guess who keeps voting to keep throwing money at unions?

Elsewhere I read that original contact was made because the officer suspected Johnson of smoking in public. I didn't even realize La Mesa had a public smoking ban. Also, it said nothing was found to substantiate that suspicion. That's a deep hole from which to dig out of in order to prove there was a purpose for the stop altogether.

What's preventing someone from being fired in this situation though? It's not "police unions" unless there's some contract language for LMPD that stipulates the job can't be terminated under any circumstance (and I doubt that completely).

It's a double-edged sword when employees can't be indiscriminately fired without cause. On the one hand, bad apples can plug on for years if they maintain themselves within the rules. On other, would it be a good thing for a city to be able to dump good veteran officers for no other reason than cost? There can be smart reforms made which don't involve extreme practices.

Smoking in public? Some people care about tobacco fumes outside but most don't. The real reason cops detain people for that is a ruse to check for warrants and other charges and issue expensive tickets to enrich the department. Often the person detained is lower income looking and minority. This stratagem ruins peoples lives and makes cops hated.
