I am thinking of moving to either california or florida. I know the taxes are high in both states and neither is very cheap. I'm looking for good people, sun, and a nice place to live for a few years. I have heard people are moving out of florida in droves, especially Miami. I'd be going a bit further north to Ft Lauderdale. I am in the health field so I know I can get work in either area, but I just don't know where to go yet. I'd be looking at southern California, like San Diego or possiblly Stockton. Any ideas, comments, suggestions would be of help.

There are no State Income Taxes in Florida.

You can't compare San Diego/ SoCal Coast to Stockton. Totally different.

I honestly can't stand Florida.

California by a long shot! You would probably like San Diego more than Los Angeles if you have a family.

so cal hands down. i grew up in san diego, and my parents recently moved to palm beach, FL. i stayed with them for a summer, and really didnt care for it. the so cal weather is nicer, people are nicer (in sd at least), and the city is nicer. the summer in FL is so hot and humid i didnt even want to go outside, and then there are the hurricanes. ill take a little rumble at my feet any day over yearly risk of a hurricane. i think cost of living may be higher in so cal, but i think if you can afford it, it is well worth it. but i may be a little biased, as im an sd girl at heart, no matter where my education has taken me.

Where are you moving from? Florida is way cheaper than most place in CA. Florida has no state income tax and usually only a 6% sales tax.

My vote goes out to CA. I've lived in FL and now I'm CA.

I've never been to CA, but was in FL in July once and OMG the humidity!

It was rather uncomfortable. Plus I kept seeing all these unusual lizards/bugs in FL and a large black snake that slithered across the sidewalk just feet from me (as I stood in shock). I had never seen anything like it. But from what I hear the winters in FL are nice in terms of weather, etc - and have also heard the beaches are nice with white sand and bright blue water.

California gets my vote. I, too, am not a big fan of Florida. Miami is about as overrated as a place can get, ie, ugly beaches (though the water temps are nice), flat, poor, Little Havana was a disappointment. And Jacksonville? No comment.

Just because I have lived mostly in Fl... I have to do a little bit of defending here. HAHA!
So the humidity is crappy, but you partly adapt to it (not entirely). And I'd take a hurrican over an earthquake anyday. I've lived through so many hurricanes, you learn what to do... hey- at least you know when they're coming and you have a good amount of prep time. (many people CHOOSE to not prepare, believe it or not). Bug and lizrds?! Does CA not have bugs and lizards? Just call the bug guy- you'll be fine. Miami and Jax are horrible examples of FL!!! As are Daytona Beach and Titusville. Great FL places IMO... Orlando (certain parts), Cocoa beach and the beaches south of there, From what I remember, Sarasota was nice... more retirees than the other places mentioned. And although Jax can be crappy, there are good parts of it. Depends on what you like. It's a huge city. So that's that. OH! and it's REALLY CHEAP to live there.
My vote still goes to CA.
