..Bill Walton??? LOL. "throw it down big man, throw it down."

Murder rate is not influenced as much by politics as shoplifting and theft certainly are. SD in a deep blue state is just as safe as other border cities, El Paso and Laredo, in a deep red state.

All that aside, good on SD for being safe once again as far as violent crime is concerned.

Even before the drop, San Diego has always had one of the lowest murder rates of large cities in the country. We have relatively low violent crime here for a major city.

Whether crime statistics are high or low, there will always be some unreported crimes. Of course, we have no idea how many, but most likely, most crimes do get reported, and we get a good sense of trends from the statistics. So while there is always some unreported crime, we can be pretty darn sure that when so many cities are seeing declines, they are actual declines.
Murder is probably the most accurate statistic though. Once there's a dead body, it's hard to hide that and pretend it didn't happen. And people notice when someone is missing.

it wasn't always the case, In the late 80's all the way to about 1996 things were pretty bad here in San Diego.

In 92 the homicide rate in the city of San Diego was like darn near 300 if i remember correctly.
Our Homicide was on par with cities like Chicago, LA, Dallas TX etc...

That Crime Bill Put a bunch of people behind bars

Many, many crimes go under-reported, but there are two that usually get fully reported: Car theft and murder.

That said, while 45 murders in San Diego makes us safer than the typical large city, that is typical for the past 25+ years. (One year there were only 29 murders!)

Nothing unusual here, and nothing to do with any of the people named in the first post.

An unrelated observation: I remember when CityData was a politics free board (except for PO&C), *sigh*

I'm still trying to figure what basketball player Bill Walton has to do with murder rates.

Back when I worked near the Midway area, I'd regularly see homeless folks muttering all kinds of things to themselves, or on occasion screamed out loud.

Not once did I think I needed to spend my time to critically analyze what they were saying...
