Tonight, I come home and listen to the news. There was a home invasion/robbery in our area of Woodland Hills. Very quiet nieghborhood on the far westend of SFV. Love it here. I know the area is very safe but I am not naive. My question is that the homeowner had a gun, shot and killed the intruder, and seriously injured the other intruder. The third got away. What are the laws for guns in home for protection here in the SFV and LA area? Just curious. I'm not going out to get one and I'm not planning to break in a persons home. but I'm just curious. Especially with the US supreme court ruling last month.

Thanks!

The supreme court decision did not have a huge effect on California law. The ruling was mostly a response to Washington D.C. gun laws, which were the strictest in the nation.

It is not against the law to have a loaded weapon in your own home in California. You could be held criminally liable for any mishaps that occur in your home including negligent discharges and children getting ahold of them.

The standard DOJ records check and 10 day waiting period apply to the purchase of a firearm and you should know the laws about who is restricted from possession of a firearm. These include ex-felons and anyone with certain restraining orders among other things. Possession doesn't always mean in your hand. Possession can be anywhere within reasonable reach.

If you do decide to get a weapon, training and complete knowledge of how it works is not required, but is a good idea in my opinion.

Sorry guys. This should have gone to the LA section. But the people of SD are always welcome to chime in with your reponses or concern!

I noticed that but figured California law is the same all over the state and decided to share what I know anyway.
