Moved- Godfather's is a pizza chain, and there is also a Godfather's in Kearney Mesa that is an italian restaurant. They are not the same places.

Agree with the plastic and fake comment. I don't mean to derail too much, but is it out line to suggest making it yourself? Italian food is simple by design, fun to cook, and the ingredients are generally affordable. Truth is you can buy much better ingredients and do it all yourself for probably half the price. In the internet age no recipe is hidden.

Give it a whirl! Back on point, though, I can't recommend a single Italian joint in San Diego that is a significant notch above the chains.

I'm telling you, Lido's in Lemon Grove is great for real Italian food, they are one of the best. They have this special, it's called dinner for 2, it's a BBQ Chicken and Rib combo (Also extremely good BBQ, and it's grilled not broiled) that comes with a side order of 2 pasta's, 2 soup, 2 salads, and garlic bread for like $24. Which is not bad considering how much food you get. Everytime I go there, I never finish all my food, the chicken and ribs is the best, the flavor, the BBQ sauce they use, which is home made, and very secret, has to be one of my favorite dishes of all time!

This place has been in Lemon Grove for over 50 something years, still owned by the same Italian family, so you can trust the place when it comes to quality.

Best Italian food is in New York and New Jersey. Doesn't mean very where else is bad or anything though.

I love how people just have to come here and say, oh there's no real good xyz food other than in abc. It's the only place to get it.

Yeah. Because there are no people of certain ethnic backgrounds other than in those places. I mean, there weren't any Italian people in a place called Little Italy or anything. And since none of those people were Italian, they sure as hell didn't start up any restaurants specializing in that food.

No, no, no, it's just like how you can't find any Chinese or Korean food in Kearny Mesa. There are absolutely no Chinese or Koreans who run places specializing in that food. You've got to to go to other cities to find it.

Hiya Tony...

Yeah, I agree. Some just have a need to be all rah over their hometowns. Fair enough, but I don't feel the need to infiltrate posts with my contrary opinion Re: individual preferences. It doesn't add anything soluble to the thread.

The best IT food I've had was when I lived in Milan, but that's 1 opinion. I've also had great IT food in Little IT's all across the states & even Montreal. My preference is that my food is authentic... although, I make fantastic IT food & am not IT, so there goes that theory.

You're right, I've found little enclaves in every city I've lived, on any continent, where great ethnic food (regardless of ethnicity) is to be found. Sometimes such a search does take one off the beaten path, but so be it, at least it exists. I do love NYC pizza & even NEPA has great pizza, imo... depends on what style one prefers... all our tastes differ. My mum is as content with a frozen pizza as she is homemade, because it's not her predilection. Clam chowder or fish stew are different issues... she knows what she likes & no substitutions will suffice.

On another note... back to CA in 3.5 mos!!! Lease is up Oct 1, but I told the SO I'm tossing boxes out of the 3rd fl window on Sept 15 so we can hit the road pronto. Either he'll pick them up & stuff them into/strap them to the car... or I'll drive over them & leave 'em behind.

Happy 4th! Hope you get to see some brilliant fireworks!

In little Italy: Mimmo's. Tasty food, awesome atmosphere (feels like your in a little italian town) .. bit pricey (as they all are in the area).

Outside of little italy: Paesano in North Park. Hole in the wall place stuck in the 70s, but the food is amazing and they have amazing menu items. After dinner go around the corner onto University Avenue and grab a dessert at Heaven's Sent desserts.
