The BART/MUNI only goes to certain routes and buses don't always go where you want to. Do most people just walk the mile to work?

Very few places in SF don't have at least a Muni line nearby. Some areas on top of hills have lines that don't run very often, but people who live up there mostly have cars, also if they walked downhill they could get to a more frequent route. Some parts of the Sunset have big gaps with no bus line but it would only be about a 10 minute walk at most to get to the 18 or the L or whatever. The further away from downtown the easier it is to park, so people are more likely to have cars. Most people in SF have cars, but if they work in downtown SF they take public transit. A lot of people live in SF and drive to other parts of the Bay Area like Silicon Valley for work.

But, really, Muni covers most of the city pretty well, the issue is how frequent bus lines run, but the majority of them at least run every 20-30 minutes during the day, and a lot of them run more like every 5 to 15 minutes.

I used to work at the edge of North Beach. Most people who worked in the area just walked, the buses didn't run all that frequently. Or you know didn't show up. It was a mile from BART/transbay and almost always faster to walk.

It all depends on your corner of SF. If you work near Jackson Square (or the Pyramid), be prepared to walk.
