I am a male college student from the East Coast, and I have an internship for the summer at a company near the San Mateo CalTrain. I won't have a car, so I will be walking to the CalTrain on both ends. I'm looking for advice on where to try to find sublets.

Specifically:
-Does it make sense to find something in San Mateo itself? Would it be OK to live within walking distance of downtown? Any apartment complexes that might do short term rentals? Areas that might have more sublets than others?

-Which towns to the south (Redwood City, Palo Alto, etc.) would be good CalTrain commutes and I wouldn't feel too isolated in without a car? Should I look for specific areas within those cities? I'm thinking that the best situation might be to live near Stanford if possible. Is that correct?

-Are there any other sources of sublets besides Craigslist? E.g., should I bother checking with Stanford University in case they sublet out dorm rooms for the summer?

Thanks so much for any help you can give.

Try San Francisco Bay Area — News, Sports, Business, Entertainment, Classifieds: SFGate for rentals

Check out San Carlos - lots of apartments near the downtown and Caltrain station. As the last person said, there are also buses that run up and down the peninsula.

I'd look at San Mateo, San Carlos, Redwood City, and (maybe) Palo Alto. San Mateo downtown itself is nice (I live in that area myself), so if you could find something there, you might be happy. It's not far from SF, either, so you can get there easily.

Palo Alto would be good to be near other college students (Stanford); but it's also a little sleepy in a suburban way, and it can be a bit expensive.

Craigslist is probably the best resource for finding sublets/rooms for rent for the summer.

Get a list of the Caltrain stations on the Peninusula. Almost all the towns have a stop and they all have what you're looking for.
