When I drove cross country, I checked out sites like:
- Road Trip USA
- The Road Trip America map wizard and forums
- The My Scenic Drives road trip planner

Those are great for the basics on routes and what you can see.

I went to the Road Trip America forum for more detailed questions about the time I'd need as I wanted to make a few stops but I had to get to the SF Bay Area by a certain date. Those people were very helpful as it's a big community of people who like taking road trips.

Good luck.

I went to school in Boise. the trip to Idaho is only about 10 hours if you go through Reno and up to Winamucka and McDermit. Not really much to see on the way the road is desolate and empty most of the time with hardly a car in sight. Once you get to boise though they have a little downtown thats not too bad and has some interesting bars and places to eat. Its nothing like the bay area bar seen but interesting non the less. outside of downtown and closer to the campus in Morison park there is the natural history and boise art museum as well as a very tiny zoo. There is also a mall, not in downtown, calld boise town centre. Not really a whole lot to do out there but you will be able to find a little something.

We've done the trip a couple of times. If you are not in a hurry I would reccomond Highway 50. For reference check out a book by Tingley, called Traveling America's Loneliest Road, a geologic history. We've stayed in Ely, Reno and camped at Berlin. You can visit the Ichthyosaur State Park, see the shoe tree, moaning sands, petroglyphs, etc.

In my opinion the most interesting places to visit along that route are also not the ones you visit in winter. At least if you like mountains, like me.

Good point. We have always done the drive in the summer.

The one time I've done that trip in February, we engaged the 4 wheel drive in Jackpot NV and took it out of four wheel drive 10 days later in Jackpot NV.
