I am trying to find out information about the SF area. My husband has been offered a job in the SF area and we have never been. We live in the suburbs of DC right now and have 2 school aged sons so I was wondering if anyone an give us insight on good suburbs/counties to live, traffic, schools etc. I am a teacher so I would also be looking for a job. We want to live in a neighborhood with all the kid friendly activities (soccer, swimming) that we have here. Thanks in advance!

It really depends on your budget/income. Are you looking to rent at first? What kind of accommodation are you looking for and where will your husband's job be? Does he like to take public transportation or will he be commuting? Would you rather be in an urban/city setting, semi-rural, or newish housing estate in a suburb, something in between? Will your kids be going to public school or private? Plenty of great options but need to know these things first!

Where's his job? A lot depends on that.

My standard answer to people looking for a family-friendly place to live in the Bay Area is: Alameda. It's a wonderful little city with a reputation for very good schools. Commuting to SF from there can be a bit of a pain (I did it for a year) but you get used to it...

However, if his job is on the Peninsula (Silicon Valley) or further afield, the commute from Alameda would not really be feasible.
