Just a question for those who live outside of San Francisco. I decided by next year I am going to start looking a homes since I pay 1300 for a studio in the city I feel I'm throwing money away. I am hoping to find something and have been looking at Alameda County. Anyone live in other areas and find it decent (I work from home, so I would only commute once in awhile and crash with friends) I really would like to live somewhere that if my job changed it would be easy to commute but I could have good neighborhood. I don't want to move to somewhere that feels like suburbs. Anyone have good recommendations to cities I've mostly been looking a Oakland, El Cerrito and surrounding areas but would consider other area. Any suggestions? the only thing i won't buy is manufactured home (ie mobile homes I just think they are bad investment) I wouldn't be opposed to living further and if I need to move back to the city can rent it out as well. I just want to take advantage of the markets while rates are low.

you left out some important information. first what is your price point?
do you want a walkable urban area or a more suburban area?
do you need to be near Bart?

Oakland can be cheap (but the market there is pretty hot now) but it or anywhere in the upper East Bay would be a lousy commute if you got a job in Silicon Valley.

The cheapest condos around are in "adams point" in Oakland. They won't appreciate by 100% in 5 years, but the location is good. Prices are good. There is still a lot of upside (with development planned/started on all sides. Or established nicer neighborhoods). And right now the mortgages are in line with the rents. So if you wanted to get something else, you would be able to rent it out and break even. A friend of a friend bought a 2 bedroom condo in the area for $200k a few weeks ago. It might have been cheaper.

If you like "newer" then look in Downtown Oakland. There are some decent deals in a few buildings. Also, there is always the area around Pleasant Hill BART for decent condos, though that is CC county (like El Cerrito).

Most points in Alameda County and Contra Costa County are horrible commutes to Silicon Valley, but easy commutes to the rest of the east bay or SF.
