I just got back from a trip to the San Francisco Bay area. I was shocked how unchanged it was since I lived there in the 1970s. I drove El Camino Real all the way from Daly City to San Jose and was shocked that there was so little updates to the area. It looked the same as it did in 1978! A general lack of places to eat, no remodeling of the stores and the same mid 20th century tired look I remember from the 1970s.

How can an area with so much wealth change so little? I saw few examples of any real commerical or residental growth in the area from SF to San Jose. What is going on?

Try driving on North First Street from Alviso to downtown San Jose. That should show you where the money has gone.

Is 1978 really midcentury? It's only a little over 20 years before 2000!

You need to venture off El Camino that's why.

Burlingame, San Mateo etc have lots of restaurants and shops for cities their size.

There is actually an artistic photo book about all the mid century stuff along El Camino. Forgot the title ...

We are talking hip! The hippest thing is to restore a place to its peak of Mad Men sparkle but trick out the interior with a mixture of retro and ultra modern minimalist.
