This is long overdue and I think they should put thousands more cameras all over the city.

Quote:
The council voted 6-1 to approve an incremental resolution allowing the city to hire a new contractor to assemble the Domain Awareness Center, a surveillance hub that would allow police and city officials to continuously monitor video cameras, gunshot detectors and license-plate readers across the city...

Other city's experiences appear to be mixed.

If it works, great. It's a total violation of civil liberties though and about as Anti-Oakland as you can get.

Are teenagers camping in parks really that scary? At the end of the day, lots of people who don't want a criminal record messing with their post-college plans.

I'm surprised something like this is even happening in Oakland of all places.

Just goes to show how diluted the city and region has become. We in the Bay Area used to be the radicals who fought for liberty and justice. Now we're actually applauding a system that is little more than a way for the government to keep tabs on us.

Maybe people in Oakland are fed up with crime and are willing to hold their noses in hopes that this might actually make a difference...

This system would be a big winner, if only it could track white collar crime in motion. But that would require cameras inside office buildings!

The more intelligent criminals will always find a way to circumvent any new technology, it happens everyday, and the technocrats love it, it forces them to continually come up with newer and newer technology where, hopefully, the next time, there'll be no tiny little loophole to jump through!

And given how smartphones/Ipads have penetrated the workforce today, decreased productivity, among these 3 manning this system, how many will be playing Candy Crush most of their shift?

I've often wondered if you could squash huge amounts of crime by eliminating cash, and going to completely electronic (and logged, audited) transactions.
