If I'm not mistaken Palo Alto costs have now reached manhattan levels. Do you think major tech companies are going to suffer because the smartest and most talented people know it's not worth that much to live there? Or is there just no limit to how much tech people will pay?

The entire Bay Area is very expensive. Prices keep going up, and companies keep hiring.

Based on my observation, the smartest and most talented people are attracted to great career opportunities and usually are not put off by high cost of living as much as you think they would.

The reason why Tech companies put up with all the regulations and taxes in California is because that is where the talent like to live otherwise they would move shop to Alabama.

A quick browse of apartment listings would suggest that unless you are comparing downtown Palo Alto to most neighborhoods in SF, it is quite the opposite, you can still find older 2bd apts in Palo Alto for less than $3000/mo on craigslist, in downtown it is more like 3500-4000. Not so much in SF unless you look in the far western end.

Yeah to say that the rents in SF are ridiculous right now would be an understatement.
