Default Dogs and fleas

I was told there is a problem in San Francisco that if you own a dog you will constantly need to bomb your house and treat your dog for fleas. Is this true? I have a VERY fluffy dog, and I have a phobia with bugs. What are the greatest 'bug issues' I will face moving from the Mile High City to sea level?

You don't need to bomb your house. You will need to flea treat your dog with Advantage or Revolution on a monthly basis. Use a good product from a vet -- not the stuff from the grocery store.

Just keep vacuuming your home on a weekly basis or more, if you want -- and toss the bags outside of your home.

If you go bagless in your vac -- take the dust cup outside also -- you are vacuuming up fleas and their eggs and fleas are great jumpers -- so if you put it into your home trash, they'll find their way out of it.

Fleas are EVERYWHERE -- and they will ride in on anything. One place we worked was so infested that we brought them home with us. Not fun at all. Their problem went away when they pulled up the ratty old carpet.

But for a few months I was vacuuming my house four to five times a week... not fun after vacuuming a quarter mile a day, to come home and spend an hour doing a thorough house vac...

Even if you have hardwood floors vacuum them. A dust mop or Swiffer won't pick up flea eggs and won't get fleas up.

I really haven't had a flea problem here, but of course a monthly treatment doesn't hurt - though I haven't used anything on my pets (1 dog & 2 cats) all year, and they don't have fleas! I had a MUCH bigger problem when I lived in Oregon, since apparently they prefer a warmer & more humid/moist climate.

Gizmo...that's a relief! I do bathe my dog regularly, but he sleeps in my bed so I want to avoid any unwelcome free-loaders!
