My wife and I are moving to the Bay Area from the midwest in August. We found a person renting out a spare bedroom in a house on Craigslist that is available now. We want to go ahead and pay for the July rent so that we can have a place when we do move in August, and also we love the place based on the pictures.

How do we go about paying for the first month rent without visiting the place and meeting the owner of the house first? How do I avoid being scam in this situation? We have voice verified him over the phone so far.

I would never pay without seeing the place and meeting the owner. Fly out and see the place first. I think a legitimate landlord/housemate would also want to meet you also!

Fly out to see it first. There are a ton of scams on craigslist and they all involve you paying money without physically seeing a place. I almost got burned about 6 years ago and happened to get lucky and avoid it.

Another option is you could do an airbnb when you get in town and stay there until you find a permanent place.
