That would leave out Marin. You can't do that; the other end of the GG Bridge is tethered to it! lol It also leaves out Solano County. All the north Bay. And the south Bay and Peninsula. I think you need to find a better at-a-glance reference.

It's pretty simple : the nine counties that have bay-front land are part of the San Francisco Bay area (speaking as a BA native, third generation).

There's literally a metal frame above Marin City. Beyond is just a taupe-plastic, barren wasteland.

I have always thought of most of those counties as Bay Area counties except:

I always thought of Vallejo to be a Bay Area city, but not the rest of Solano County.

Sonoma County - yes, but a lot of its Northern cities I never really thought of as Bay Area cities.

Napa County - Never thought it was exactly part of the Bay Area

Santa Clara County - no
San Benito County - no
San Joaquin County - no
Santa Cruz County - no

Just my opinion, don't bother looking for logic in it.

Santa Clara should definitely be considered the Bay Area as parts of it is actually touching the bay itself.

^^^^^^^ This. My family moved to Santa Clara County in 1957, I grew up there, and we always understood ourselves to be living in the Bay Area.

San Francisco Bay Area - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

(It was incredibly easy to find out rather than having to start a poll)

Huh?

Santa Clara county directly borders the bay. There's even a marina in Alviso to launch small boats into the bay. I've never heard of anybody from here actually think that Santa Clara county is not part of the Bay Area. That's ridiculous.

The answer the OP's question, the "real" SF Bay Area is any county that touches the bay at some point.

-Santa Clara
-San Mateo
-San Francisco
-Marin
-Sonoma
-Napa
-Solano
-Contra Costa
-Alameda

So from south to north:

Santa Clara County
Alameda County
San Mateo County
San Francisco City & County
Marin County
Contra Costa County
Solano County
Sonoma County
Napa County (I could see how you could debate that it doesn't have a shoreline with San Pablo Bay for this one).
San Joaquin County is now officially part of the Bay Area

It's quite clearly part of the Central Valley, not the Bay Area. People commute to the Bay Area from parts of that county (and from Santa Cruz County, for that matter) but that does not change the geography.
