How do these 4 towns compare to one another in terms of:
public schools, walkability, weather, character, diversity, taxes, home
Prices? What else distinguishes them from one another? Thanks for your opinions.

Go to GreatSchools - Public and Private School Ratings, Reviews and Parent Community for school ratings. Alameda and San Mateo each have a smaller sized high end and a larger midrange and lower tier. Hillsborough and Piedmont have almost no lower tier and are considerably more expensive than the others. None of the above has any truly inexpensive (for the Bay Area) places.

Alameda is a flat island, SM, Piedmont and HillsB have flat and very hilly areas. HB and SM have some real woodsy areas. Alameda and Piedmont are in the East Bay, and therefore more accessible to SF and less to Silicon Valley jobs.

For home prices, you can find those on the internet. Try Zillow or Redfin. You need to be much more specific re: what you're looking for, topography, culture, and house and lot size requirements. Right now you're so being general it's useless to give advice.
