I just graduated from UC Santa Cruz and am looking to move out of the area closer to SF but not actually in the city. Job prospects look like they will be in San Jose or SF. I have a car and don't mind driving 30 mins each way, but don't way to get stuck in traffic for an hour each way. I like towns that have some character and are not just strip malls and drive thrus. I am also single and enjoy independantly owned coffee places, restaurants, etc. I am hoping to move into a cottage, guest house, or small apartment building.

thanks for your advice!

Both Alameda and San Mateo have loads of character and hardly a hint of the big-box fetish that is so prevalent in, say, Fremont or Union City. Take a drive down El Camino Real along the numbered avenues in San Mateo, then drive down Central Avenue in Alameda, and see which one appeals to you. The only real difference is the commute which is notably worse from Alameda to either SF or SJ.
