Hi. We are thinking about relocating to the Bay area since I have a job opportunity at CSUEB. I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions where we should live that is safe for children and not extremely expensive. I have a flexible work schedule so I don't worry about the traffic too much. But, I alo hate sitting in a traffic jam. Also, do you think it's good time to buy a condo in the area? FYI, we might move somewhere else a few years later.

Any input, suggestion, or information would be greatly appreciated!

I'd look in Hayward -- but I don't know about the schools. And if your timeline is 2-3 years, I don't think I'd buy yet. I think prices are still higher for buying than renting yet, so we still have a way to fall.... and if you buy now in 3 years you may not get your money out. if we were talking 5 years then yeah, if you get a good deal that you don't have to sink a lot of money into -- buy. But 2-3 years, in my opinion (and I'm not anyone who has any real estate expertise, just a long time homeowner who's been through this cycle a few times) we *might* be in recovery by then.

Smile commute from Mountain House

Thank you for your input, Tallysmom!

I have another question you might be able to answer. Given that we stay for 5 years or so, we are thinking about buying a house now.

After some googling, we found that MH might be a good place to live. It looks like affordable and safe. Do you know anything about the town? I know it will take about an hour to commute, but it may be doable if I avoid peak traffic hours.

Morgan Hill? I grew up there. It'll take more than an hour to get to Hayward, even off peak. 880 is absolutely and positively no fun at all. But my dad has commuted from there to Redwood City for almost 20 years now, so hey.. if you can carpool, it might work. You're not going to have any public transit options, though, if there are problems.

It -is- affordable and safe.

Thank you, sonarrat! But, I meant Mountain House (probably near Tracy), not Morgan Hill.

Ah, didn't read your tag line. Well.. 580 is a mess too, but it isn't -as- bad.
