Hello,

I am excited because I am moving to Alamo Square next month. I want to ride a bike to Gough and Geary every evening for an evening class.

Could you all recommend a type of bike that I should buy. I am not sure if I should get a road bike or a hybrid since I will carry two heavy books. I know that I don't want a mountain bike.

Also, I will look for something used under $200 too.

Thanks in advance!

Actually you do want a mountain bike or at least a hybrid, because they have lower gearing. That is, unless you enjoy breaking your legs off first thing out your apartment! I used to have a 20% grade right out of my house (remote part of Morgan Hill), and I couldn't handle it until I got a mountain bike.

Wow, this is the first time that someone shared the advantages of having a mountain bike. I have a hybrid now, but people just keep mentioning these hybrids. Which is what I have now. I'll ask around some.

Thanks Sonarrat

The gearing is definitely to your advantage. The whole idea is that you need to be able to scale almost sheer cliff walls! That, and you will also get fewer flat tires since they're nice and knobby, and it's safer in the rain since the tires are treaded.
