I'm interested in San Francisco, and just wanted to know if there are any areas with warm summer weather (80s or 90s) and good freshwater swimming areas nearby (within a few hours' drive). I have been to Big Sur during the fall and it seems like a great place for this, but I'm not sure if it gets warmer in the summer than San Fran does. Thanks!

Basic rule about the Bay Area - the further east you go, the hotter it gets!! The areas around Walnut Creek, San Ramon, and out toward Tracy/Livermore all have warm weather in the summer. You can also look on the Peninsula & South Bay (everything between Burlingame & San Jose, more or less), which averages 10 degrees warmer than SF. These are all within a reasonable drive from the ocean & bay, so you'd find plenty of water to swim in... but be prepared for some COLD water!! And fyi, the Big Sur/Monterey area is almost as cold as San Fran, since they get that coastal fog. I went to summer camp in Pebble Beach as a teen, and instead of giving us camp t-shirts they gave us sweatshirts.

As for recreation activities, you'll find almost anything your heart could desire here... beaches, skiing (3-4 hours away), hiking, biking, horseback riding, "city stuff", and so on. After all, there is a reason this area is so expensive - LOL. Anyway, hope this helps & good luck with your move!

Edit: I just noticed you're looking for FRESHwater, so I guess the ocean isn't what you want... but anywhere in the Bay Area is "a few hours" drive from a number of lakes - Tahoe (my favorite & where I lived for a while), Clearlake, Folsom Lake, Berryessa, and so on. Are those considered freshwater?

P.S. Today was super hot, even here in SF... so even we get that California sunshine once in a while.
