When people refer to 'the peninsula' in SF - where is that exactly?

It basically refers to San Mateo County, plus maybe Palo Alto. There are other peninsulas in the area, but that's what we refer to as "the peninsula."

Basically anything directly south of San Francisco, but north of San Jose. Many people refer to northern Santa Clara County as "the South Peninsula," so I wouldn't say it's just San Mateo County, but that's the bulk of it... lots of us also separate into South, Mid & North Peninsula, as I often do.

Here, let's make it simple... (more or less)

I may have gone a little far south on that... but I personally consider Sunnyvale and maybe Santa Clara (the city) to be part of the Peninsula.

Everyone defines it a bit differently . I consider San Mateo County plus Palo Alto as The Peninsula. Basically those in the 650 area code (plus Palo Alto ). Sunnyvale & Santa Clara are in the "South Bay".

We have been searching up and down the coast all the way from Tahoe to San Diego to try and find a nice family neighborhood. Don't get me wrong we have found many nice neighborhoods but not us - we love the city but want a nice home. Can anyone give us any suggestions as to where look for the best place to live that is close to the city. I have 4 sister's that live within a 20 mile radius of downtown san fran. I am looking for a neighborhood w/ good schools and good neighbors possibly a gated community. I love Tiburon but way too expensive for the housing. We want to spend between $1.5-$2mil. Would love to be w/in 30-60 miles from city...we have a boat so close to a marina would be great!

thanks!
