How can students afford to live in the city? Is there any part of the city that is safe and more affordable?

I'm strongly considering moving to the city from Birmingham but I'll be a full time student with a part time job. I will be living with my girlfriend and she will be working full time though.

Any advice about moving there?

Students that don't have money share apartments, flats and houses. Typically the living room is converted into an additional bedroom as well as any dining room and the only common space is the kitchen and a tiny bathroom. Five students living in a three bedroom flat is not uncommon. The Excelsior District is fairly safe and not too far out of the way and rent is a tad lower than the Mission.
