Hi! We're expecting our first baby in 2 months and need to buy a new home asap. We are currently just renting and will need to move immediately. My husband works in SF and we'd prefer to find a house near the area and still stay within the peninsula (and not cross a bridge!). We are considering Daly City, South San Francisco and San Bruno. Which would be the best area to raise a family (have safe neighborhood, excellent public schools, community etc, but still not too expensive, 500k-600k range)? We're very much stressed over this and hope you can help. Of course, if you have other neighborhoods in mind, feel free to suggest it. Thanks!

In many cases, you would not have to cross a bridge, but a transbay tube by BART or the water by ferry. As far as schools and commutes go, Castro Valley gives you the most bang for your buck. It has a BART station, cheaper than Alameda, which has two ferry terminals, and is unincorporated (and thus rumored to have lower property taxes).

To be honest, I've lived in South San Francisco. I have a decent understanding of the area. If kids are at all ever going to be an issue, I would take your $600K and get a condo or small house in Millbrae or Burlingame instead of buying a house in northern SM county. The Avalon Park neighborhood of SSF has a good elementary school, but the high school is not so great.
