We are possibly relocating to SF from Pittsburgh. My husband's job would be in Oakland. What areas would be family friendly with good schools and a relatively easy commute? What would the commute from Walnut Creek to Oakland be like?

Walnut Creek to Oakland can be ugly sometimes. Depending on where in Walnut Creek with zero traffic the commute is approximately 15-20 minutes. Add traffic, accidents, tunnel congestion etc.. in can be 30+. Best bet for you would be Orinda. Good schools, family friendly and on the other side of the tunnel by only 1 exit.

24 is being expanded with a fourth bore through the Caldecott Tunnel, so long-term it might not be a bad choice if you can put up with a bottleneck while you wait for them to do that. BART is also an option for commuting between Walnut Creek and Oakland, and it's more affordable if you stay on the east side of the water compared with crossing the bridge.

My coworker commutes from Walnut Creek (Lafayette border) to downtown Oakland to work and she catches BART most days--(either drives to BART or rarely takes the "one" bus that gets her to BART). Sometimes she drives. It seems pretty effortless for her, actually, so I don't consider it a "bad" commute.

There are some great neighborhoods in Oakland, you may also want to look at Alameda, Albany, and the Lamorinda area. (Lafayette, Moraga, Orinda)
