Hi all,

I'm starting a job in the 500 Ellis street block in the Tenderloin in San Francisco. This is an amazing job, but I don't have much experience in rough neighborhoods. Is this one of the safer or worse areas of the Tenderloin? Any tips for avoiding trouble?

It's a bad area, but with basic street smarts, you should be fine. Don't walk around with your phone out is the main thing. If it is an amazing job, take it.

*I'm also a young white woman

Tomorrow I'm going in for some paperwork, will wearing a nice suit skirt and blazer make me a target?

That doesn't matter. There are more issues at night, when car traffic is low. If you ever feel unconfortable walk closer to the street that way cars will easily see you in case anything happens. However, the odds of something happening is still lower than getting in a car accident or getting hit crossing the road, so don't sweat it. Walk with confidence and don't have your phone out looking like a lost puppy.

Tasers are legal in California, so you can always buy one of those discreet flashlight looking tasers when you get off at night just for insurance.

I would not recommend it. Very high crime, I wouldn't walk through there any time of the day.

See the chart below. The Tenderloin located is in the dark red area near the center.

This entire area in red and pink is very high crime...

I don't even feel safe driving through the neighborhood. The vagrants would walk right up to your car while you're waiting for the light and start washing your windows with dirty newspaper, then demand money.

I'd say it isn't very pleasant. You need to be aware of your surroundings, and have more than basic street smarts. I wouldn't want to walk alone after dark in most of the Tenderloin. I have walked in a group many times. Walk with a purpose, and don't get depressed walking by all the halfway houses, treatment centers and SROs.

Always keep your eyes wide open and do your best to not look intimidated or scared.

Use good common sense and always listen to your instincts.

I work with a young girl who lives in the Tenderloin...she walks to and from work each morning and evening. She has never had an issue. She just minds her own business and steps over or walks around the vagrants and passed out people.

I know a few people that live in the Tenderloin, one is a 95 lb 21 year old female. She walks or uses MUNI and hasn't had any problems. There are a few ethnic restaurants I like there as well. The poster who feels scared about driving through should probably move to South Dakota.

You are being irresponsible for telling a young white female that it is fine to wander through the Tenderloin dressed in business attire. I know people who have been mugged in the Tenderloin. I wouldn't want that to happen to anyone, not even you.
