Hello,
I am interested in living west of San Jose where things are somewhat more affordable. I have a family with three young children and I work as a software engineer. So I will most likely need to work somewhere in San Jose.
So far I have read some interesting information here on places like Felton, Boulder Creek and Lompico. I am also interested in other outlying areas such as La Honda.
The thing I haven't heard mentioned was the commute to San Jose. I have driven the 17 HWY in the rain before at it is not fun. People drive really nutty around the turns even in sub par conditions (fog, rain, etc...). This borders on 'demon possession' and I have done a lot of mountain driving in all kinds of weather living both in Colorado and California.
Is driving HWY 9 > 35 pretty much the same kind of 'frenzied' experience for daily commuters? Does it take longer using the 9 > 35 from lets say Boulder Creek vs. 17 from Felton if one works in San Jose?
As an alternative there are places like Morgan Hill but the prices are quite a bit higher and it is further from the coast.
Any input appreciated.

There is Highway 9, but it's still rainy in the winter, too.
What many people do in Santa Cruz is take the Scotts Valley (which is very near Lompico, Felton, Ben Lomond, etc. -- the mountain towns) Express bus to San Jose -- there is a park and ride. I hate driving, so if I have to go to San Jose, that's what I do, unless I get a ride with a friend.

When i lived in santa cruz hiway 17 was always packed during rush hours (that's right hours). was going from santa cruz to mountain view. i don't know about the other areas but at that time i was trying to move to boulder creek for commuter's sake. I had a friend who lived there and she said that it was quicker.
