Short answer: no. Long answer: hell no. You'll be too busy working and/or commuting to enjoy any of the attractions, and you won't be able to afford the kind of housing you're looking for without taking the kind of swan-dive loan that is currently bending the mortgage industry over big time.

I think there are probably better places to move too with the type of work you do and your interests in mind. I live here because I was raised here. I would never recommend anyone move to San Jose unless their jobs transferred them or unless they are a Software Engineer. You will not find the arts, music, and culture that you enjoy here. There is a little in downtown San Jose but this place is not known for that.

Be careful where you decide to move. My husband and I were in your same situation, sold and moved to Florida. It sucks here. Trying to get out of what we thought was going to be paradise! We miss SJ!

People are so quick to tell people to go to North Carolina. No offense, but I'd honestly rather not ever be faced with moving there. I live in Virginia on the border, and I have family who lives in NC, work in NC all the time, and hear 23020239303 people (especially in Florida forums) talk about going to NC. Well, you have fun with that! Raleigh is evidently looked at as some kind of Babylon by Floridians. I just do not get it.

I suppose that's why this forum is so confusing for movers though, huh? Nothing gives inisight like a true visit.

I completely concur with the last 4 replies! I am a born & raised CA gal and love it here, but simply cannot afford the life I want with the prices around here. My husband & I make a combined salary of over 250K and are still struggling. It is crazy to make this kind of money and have so little house to show for it. We are moving to NC in the next few months and cannot wait to live a more affordable life. I warn you not to move to the bay area.

ChristmasGal,

I wish I have your courage. You're right $250K doesn't buy much around here, even $350K is still an average income. No one here can truly feel their income is above average unless it's $1 million a year every year. To be define as wealthy their household income must be at least $2 million a year around here to live very comfortably. Our quality of life versus income level is the lowest in the country, and we work the longest hours compared with rest of the country. Sometimes I feel the whole Silicon Valley thing is a big scam.

It's not that you won't be able to find jobs....just that the higher wages you'll get in the Bay Area still don't make up for the much higher cost of living. I would expect that to especially be true in the hospitality industry, as there are lots of immigrants from the 3rd world in those kinds of jobs here.
