Amazing. I rented a little house with a yard right next to SJCC for only $330 in the early 80s. That was right before rents started skyrocketing. At that time, 1 bedroom apartments were going for about $400 a month. In 1989 when I moved out, my rent was going to $550 a month. In 1996, I rented a beat up trailer by Calero reservoir for only $450 a month. When that rent jumped to $800 a month, I moved up to Washington in 2001 and rented a two bedroom apartment for $445 a month.

Times sure do change.

We don't know where OP works, do we? He/she just said he/she would work in South Bay. South Bay is quite a large area. Don't know why you are certain that Santa Clara would be a better commute than North or South San Jose (It might be true, but we can't say that for sure based on the information OP gives).

Well the Blossom Hill area in San Jose is near the light rail, so you don't have to drive to work. So that's good.

Downtown is the best place, find something cheap there. I love downtown San Jose, lived there for a year and it was great.
