Hello,

Could you please share the usual salary percentage change during change of jobs in Silicon Valley? I am looking this for a non manager mid/senior level technical position.

Is it like 30-40%?

Thanks

For my previous moves it has been 11%, and 13%. 30-40% sounds more common for people being recruited from other regions. I have only heard of a 30-40% bump when people have been in the same job for a long time and theor market value has gone up faster than their salary, which happens if one stays in the same company for a while, by which I mean over 4 years, and can't get management to see their value.

You should not accept less than a 100% increase. The cost to maintain the techie lifestyle increases every year. I mean, that new Ferrari 488 GTB coming out next year - it's not going to be any cheaper than the 458 it's replacing.

I usually receive a 8-15% base increase, plus I negotiate a better commission/bonus package (I work in technical sales), stock options, or grants, the ability to work remotely (at least part of the week) and some additional PTO/vacation days.

Depending on the industry, it ranges from 10% to nearly 40%. I just accepted a position with a new firm in SJ and told them the exact dollar amount that it would take to get me to jump ship. It happened to be 37% + they had to buy me a new car. In homogenized tech positions that are crowded with H1B visa guys/girls, don't expect that much of an increase, but, in industries like mine (hardware integration), there are simply no cheap replacements for a worker like me. If a company doesn't have an engineer like me, they will miss out on several million dollars revenue. Also, knowing that a firm is desperate to get someone with your skills gives you an enormous bargaining chip.

It also helps to do the research for what average salaries are for your role, in the same industry, in the Bay Area. You can provide the recruiter with data from Glassdoor and such to support your case. You can also have more leverage if you already have another offer in hand. If you're dead set on receiving a much larger than a 10-15% raise, you should come armed with data, sell your case as to why you should be compensated at a level commensurate with the average salary for the role (not just a small bump in your current pay) and be ready to play hard ball (say no if they will not budge).

Ferraris get hung up on the ramps on our parking structure, so they're left at home to be driven on the weekends. A 911 Turbo S can make it up and down the ramps, as can an Aston Martin Vantage, along with more mundane grocery getters like a Mercedes SL63.
