I live in Fremont and there are ask kind of burglary break in and other stuff. Haven't experienced myself during 4 years if living there, with the exception of losing bicycle one time from very nice apartments. Friend of mine said your neighborhood is becoming nice looking ghetto.

I have been living in san jose downtown (95113, 95110) for almost 10 months. I dont think there is gang activity around here. I certainly won't recommend that neighborhood for family people. but for students, singles recently employed place is not bad. Not sure about east side san jose. I heard things are changing a lot in positive side.

Default Don't Hike

I heard a nightmare story about someone in Alum Rock Park who went hiking and came back to the parking lot and found a note under their windshield wiper. The note said basically "Sorry but we needed this more than you." It turned out that the thieves had stolen the car battery, believe it or not. Yeah, now this is a parking lot with a ton of graffiti spray painted everywhere to WARN you. So yeah, don't go hiking in Alum Rock Park or you may be sorry.
As for other stuff... I recall going to East Side San Jose back in the '80's and seeing people walking around the neighborhoods with brown paper sacks. I learned later on that these were sacks of drugs and that they were delivering them to various places.
Another story is I was just driving about and since I had a VERY short military style haircut the car in front of me acted very unusually and, at a traffic light, stopped and a bunch of them went running out in all directions and flipping me the bird as though I was the law. They must have thought I was going to bust them but nope. I was just a silly white guy on the wrong side of town with the wrong haircut. That's all. Poor dupes. I feel sorry for them to this day for being so paranoid.
Another one, well... my sister got robbed at a light train station in downtown. Bunch of mexicans ganged up on her and demanded she fork over all her cash. Then casually walked away. Even the women with the guys orchestrating it were so casual about it. Of course my sister never reported it to the police but the problem then still exists. These bullies are on our light rails.
The thing is, San Jose is rotten with filth gangs and such and there is NOTHING the police can do about it and ever will. I know someone very high up on the chain of authority in the San Jose Police Department and to tell you the truth, he's not going to stop it and he never will. The problem is so bad it's laughable. Thing is, the state has a way of stopping all that with the three strikes law. So there's a thing.... but... think about this. These gangs have an UNLIMITED supply of gang members of illegal immigrants into this country and state and therefor no matter the three strikes law, the gangs still and always will prosper. That is the real issue here. I don't see a final solution.

san jose is still one of the safest big cities if not THE safest big cities in california. if you look deeper in the numbers. sometimes city data blows things out of proportion.

Gang activity is definitely increasing in San Jose, despite what boosters here may tell you.

but still a lot safer than many other cities in the bay area, even smaller cities, so that is an eye opener, when a city of 1million in san jose is still safer than one that is only 100K, based on crime per X amount of people.

no boosters here, its just a known fact.

Most people who are scared of east side san jose obviously havn't been to anywhere in the eastbay

They live in houses their parents bought many years ago.

Story and King, the part of town that used be known for gangs, has actually be revitalized a bit. Not that I'd want to live there, but it's probably not the worst area anymore. If you really want to be around chain link fences, cars parked on the lawn, cut-off Ben Davis shorts and pulled up socks, you'll have to go a little more east, closer to White Rd.

A good number of the "cholos" who lived in these areas 10 years ago have moved out to places like Stockton and Modesto where housing prices are cheaper. Stockton is the new East San Jose.
There’s no comparing Stockton to East San Jose. East San Jose is like Beverly Hills compared to Stockton. Before I worked for the state, I worked in the Central Valley in LE and Stockton easily ranked top 5 in crime in the entire nation back in the 90s.
