We are from virginia and are planning to move to Sarasota. We have a 100 year old son and an 18 year old daugther. We were enthralled with a property in Laurel Oaks. I'd be interested in all opinions of this neighborhood. We like the large property sizes and floor plans, we don't play golf.

We would like to know:
Is it a good area for children?
Are the people pretentious?
How are the schools? Especially middle school.

Thank you for any info you can share.

Laurel Oaks is a gated golf course community on Bee Ridge Rd about 2 miles east of I-75 Some high income famous people live there. Homes are big and expensive.

The middle school would be McIntosh Middle or if you wanted to send him to Pine View and he qualified, that would be an option. I do know of a few families that live in there but I don't know them personally so I can't speak to the character of the people there.

The state of Florida has McIntosh rated as an "A" school: School Accountability Report...
You can also check them out on Greatschools.com

Good luck with it!

Sorry not kid friendly and pretentious. Very golf orientated with many retirees
Turtle Rock or rivendell would be better for you

From what I have heard, you may feel out of sorts not golfing at all and living there.

Thank you everyone for the information. It's very helpful.

Does anyone know anything about Misty Creek or River Club (which is next to Lakewood Ranch)?

We've heard that some of the HOA restrictions are a bit over the top in Deer Creek. Such as, you can't park a car in your driveway overnight. I know that HOA rules try to protect home values but I think that's a bit crazy.

Hey celesteann,
Welcome to the board!
You will find it pretty helpful!
I am from Maryland and bought down in Florida last year.
Being from out of state you ought to learn a few things about buying in Florida, and this thread is very very helpful.

When I started looking, I had a ton of questions and got a lot of help, from insurance, to inspections, to flood zones, to elevation certificates, to appraisals, loan agents, the whole works.

Below is a link to what essentially is a journal I started when I began looking. It tracks step by step all the things I asked, numerous trips I took, and the continuing help I got from the beginning - all the way through. We've made a lot of friends and had a lot of fun along the way.

I would read it from the begining, it goes pretty quickly, but I posted the link of the summary (of sorts) first.

I hope you find this helpful, and have a couple laughs along the way.

River Club and Misty Creek are golfing communities which inherently have retirees and are not kid friendly
River Club is not too snobby and there are some kids and good schools
I would suggest you stay away from Golf Club communities

Is there a reason why you are picking mostly golfing communities? Would you be happy living in a community that does not have golfing but a golf course nearby? Most communities have courses not more than a few miles away. Have you looked into Turtle Rock in Palmer Ranch or Rivendell?

We tend to like the lot sizes in those communities. They are a bit larger and give us more privacy. We currently live on 2 acres and obviously don't expect a lot that size but we don't like it when houses are right on top of each other. I think we looked at one in turtle rock and didn't like the lot. We have not seen Rivendell. We will take a look.
