My husband and I are considering relocating from Pittsburgh, PA to Florida. Due to the Pirates (our baseball team) training camp being located in Bradenton my husband insists this is the city in Florida for us. I looked at two apartments over the web (Bradenton Village) and (La Maridia). The reviews I read said that both apartment complexs have major drug issues. This is certainly not something that I would like for my children to be exposed to. Is anyone familiar with the area, the crime, what parts of bradenton or surrounding areas are not super expensive yet safe to raise children?

i've only been to bradenton 2x but i'd suggest you look in Sarasota instead. He can always drive 20 minutes to the baseball game!

I live in South Bradenton about five minutes from Sarasota and I absolutely love it here. Now, I don't have small children so, therefore, I can't give you advice concerning schools, etc. I know there is crime around here, but there is crime everywhere. Sorry if I didn't give ya a lot of help, but I am truly happy here. Good luck!

Most people moving into the area prefer northwest Bradenton, south Manatee county (University Pkwy area) or east Bradenton near I75. You might try looking in those areas.

I hope I'm not breaking any rules here, because I'm only trying to be helpful, but you posted on the Fort Myers board some questions about Westchase Apartments today. Fort Myers is very far from Bradenton. You didn't ask about jobs, so I hope you both have jobs or another means of support. You might also want to checkout school ratings.

I don't live in Manatee County, but I know the area a little. As in most places, there are good sections and not-so-good sections. In any case, wherever you choose to live, it's almost impossible to offer suggestions without knowing your budget, that is, what you are planning to spend for rent or a mortgage. Apartment complexes are generally noisy and not great places to raise children. I would suggest looking for a small house or duplex to rent in a residential area. Although Florida is very transient anyway, I believe apartments have a larger turnover than condos and houses, and the rents aren't really much different. Just my opinion, for what it's worth.

I second the Sarasota area! I've lived here for years and have raised kids here. Sunshine Rules is right about looking in those areas she mentions if you truly want to look in Bradenton. You should look in person though first and get a feel and check out the school system. I know several people that live in Bradenton and do like it and they have kids too.

Bradenton is fine if you stay East, there are rough areas, but there are rough areas in Sarasota. IMO, being a mother and teacher, Manatee schools are much better. Taxes are much lower too. Check out th University Park area, maybe Tuscany apartments or a town home rental in Carolina landings. This area is absolutely beautiful and safe- it's far south Bradenton, very suburban like. It's also close to many beaches, and the expressway. We have a 5 year old, we moved from a horrible area in Bradenton to this area and love it. We moved from Chicago 5 years ago, and did lots of research before buying here.

Hello there Obie 119!
We are currently living in Chicago and looking to move to FL also. We are doing a lot of research and are interested in Bradenton/Sarasota.
Any thoughts on your move? Worth it? happy? we have one 2 1/2 year old and one on the way, due in October.
How are the schools? Quality of life? taxes? total cost of home ownership? compared to the Chicago area...
Thank you in advance for your help!

I am also REALLY considering moving to Sarasota/Bradenton area. I am making the move in March, My Sister, he Husband and kids live their as well as my Mom just moved to Tampa last week. My Fiance is best friends with my Sister so she is really pushing towards Florida.

Now I have lived in Florida, Tennessee and currently reside in Ohio. I work in the insurance industry, but being from the South I am not "home" here. I currently have a solid Job offer in Raleigh, NC but nothing concrete in Sarasota. I do have about 2 years in savings so I am sure in 2 years I could find a solid job, my Fiance graduates soon and will have a degree in Health Care Administration, so I do no think it would be to hard for her to find something either. We currently have a 3 year old son and a 1 year old daughter.

I am really torn, do I move to Paradise with my family? or Move to NC with a solid job. Keep in Mind I do have more than enough money to live for 2 years comfortably on about 2500 a month budget, I would like to pay about 1200 a month for rent/ maybe even rent to own option. Any advice or help would be appreciated I am making a FOR SURE move by March!

Edit:School system is a major thing to me as well!
