Hello again, the home we are buying has vinyl windows in the Florida room are torn and need to be repaired. My Wife hates the look of the vinyl and I would like to know if there is a code requirement in Charlotte county that would prevent us from replacing the vinyl with either glass or Plexiglas. The frames look like aluminum storm window frames that we have here in the Midwest.
Thanks for your help.
Dave

No, you can replace the windows with regular windows.

My parents live in Charlotte County. They just had their vinyl windows in their lanai replaced with acrylic windows. You can have vinyl, acrylic, regular windows, or all screen put in a lanai. You do not need a permit for it either. The acrylic windows are more like regular windows. You can use the room pretty much 3 seasons versus just having screens. It depends on how you use the room. My parents have regular furniture in their lanai. We like to eat out on our lanai especially in the winter and we use it to entertain and play cards, but we only have screens. We have all wicker patio furniture with cushions in our lanai. I know someone that could give you a free estimate for acrylic or screen. He did my parents windows.

I suggest calling a few window companies to come take a look and give you options. Use local companies, not the big box stores. You will generally get better pricing from the local guys as well. DM me if you want a recommendation. I bought new 20ft PGT sliding doors this winter from a local company and LOVE them! 1/2 the price that the big box stores quoted.

I just upgraded my lanai windows to glass sliders.....getting rid of those horrid cheap vinyl ones.

Yes, you have to clean any window a couple of times a year....if you like clean nice windows with a nice view. For outside I use that windex pad thing.....spray water on the window, do a quick once over with the pad on a stick, then just rinse.
Windows come out looking great....no streaks, water marks or anything. Takes no time at all to do the whole houseful of windows. No big deal at all.......

Yes, you are right you do need a permit for regular windows, but not the vinyl or acrylic. That is for Charlotte County anyway. Another thing to consider is that if you get regular windows installed, they must be impact resistant or you have to have hurricane shutters for them. New code since hurricane Charley.

Not sure if this photo will show up, but if it does these are the windows in question.
Thanks to all who have responded so far.
