I always run a fan on the lanai when we're out. The small insects can't fly when it's "breezy". I used this method while in Chicago over the summer months too. It always kept the mosquitoes away too.

Very good. I forgot to mention that. The no see-ums weigh about roughly less than one speck of dust each, so yeah, that ought to do it.

P.S. This has been a totally non-scientific comment.

The time I was bothered by them, in fact the ONLY time, was Thanksgiving weekend.

"We don't need our screens serviced. our pool and cage are brand new. They are so small they come right through the screen. We sprayed all around the lanai and also sprayed the screens. Seems much better now. Can sit our there without getting eaten."

We are swarmed with them in our pool. It's NOT seasonal...it's been going on for a couple of years and it's not getting any better! I have been to pool supply places and they don't have any suggestions. I don't have one bush in my back yard just a plush green lawn so it's not bushes. Very annoying!

In the 8 years since this thread began, Fifer, the nations leading Lanai screen manufactuer came out with 20-20 screen that is so tightly woven, it doesn't let n-see-ums through.

Here's the link:

https://www.phifer.com/product/no-see-ums-20-20/

I have 20-20 and it's 100% effective. Only when I'm doing yard work do I get bitten now. Maybe Phifer will develop 20-20 jumpsuits. Wearing long pants is too darned hot this time of year. Bug spray is somewhat effective on me. I still get bit, just not as much as no spray.

Did you get the smallest screen possible? Our contractor told us that the regular size screen wouldn't stop them but that the smaller size does (most of them)....

I haven't put the to the test because we are seasonal.

A few weeks ago I had a dozen bites on the inside of my lower arm. I can't imagine a mosquito could have worked that quickly so I'm suspecting no see ems. I cover up completely when I'm walking my dogs at night so maybe during the day when I bent down to pick up after them, a bunch of them got me from the grass. All I know is, the bites were so horribly itchy, I had to sit with my arm on an ice pad for a couple days....nothing topical was helping. One of my not-favorite things about living in Florida.

They make screen material that has a tighter mesh to keep no see ums out. It works really well.

Those sound more like sand fleas.
