Small Dog,me and Siesta Key?
I am going to stay at a friends in Siesta Key for a month next summer and I am a little worried about our dog. It is a pomeranian and will sometimes be in a fenced yard playing alone. Should I have any worries as far as bugs or reptiles bothering the dog? (Or the dog bothering them) And I am somewhat of an active person who enjoys a good nightlife. I also make an average living. I think that I will enjoy the stay but others have disagreed. Any opinions?

Fleas. Fire ants are a problem, so make sure you keep them don in the yard. Other than that, a fenced yard shouldn't be a problem. An alligator will eat a dog, but it doesn't sound like you will have you dog around gators.
A bigger problem may be your dog eating a poisonous toad, which happens. The poisonous snakes will probably stay away, but a tiny dog may be a tempting meal for a snake.

Tempting Meal? Uh Oh
That sort of worries me. I have heard that there are black snakes but I didn't know that they ate small animals. What kind of snakes would be in Siesta Key that would eat the dog? Would it be better if I always took it out on a leash? I always take him out on a 16 ft. retractactable leash now because I don't have a fenced yard. I'm not a big fan of snakes myself so I kinda hope I don't see TOO many!

I wouldn't worry about snakes much, but if you were planning on leaving him out alone for hours at a time...

Me and my dog
The advice so far has been great and I will especially listen to the one about heart worm medication. Why would that be more of a problem in the area? Is it because of the climate? (I'm from the midwest)

Dogs need to be on heartworm preventative all year long in Florida. There are a LOT of dogs whose owners didn't give them the preventative and now have heartworms. Very common, and easily preventable. They are transmitted by mosquito, and it never is cold enough to kill them. Our cats are on heartwom too.
