Bird Key Park has a little beach on the bay (walk under the Ringling Bridge to get there) where I take my dog to swim all the time. There are occasionally one or two dogs in the water, but usually it's pretty quiet (especially in the summer). I read an article a few weeks ago that said that one of the beach accesses on Siesta was going to have a short run as a dog beach- with a lot of red tape, of course! Does anyone know anything more about that?

However as a responsible pet owner I know all my own dogs behavior and I have a lab mix that isn't mean but I know she would bite back if nipped at so I wouldn't put her in that situation to harm anyone else's dog nor risk losing her if she was deemed an aggressive dog. So she's never been to the dog beach for that reason. I love all dogs, not just my own.
The dog is rarely the problem, it's the owners and sorry but I'd have to ask why the dogs weren't kept apart after the first nip? I would have promptly addressed the situation hopefully before it escalated. The fact that little dog was left dead on the beach is heartwrenching and can't imagine how disturbing that was to fellow pet owners and their families!
My dog was on a leash, FiFi wasn't. It wasn't at a beach, BTW, but at a campground. FiFi's owner needs to take responsibility, including taking care of the body. What was I suppose to do, take FiFi and dump her into the garbage, meanwhile holding on to my dog on the leash? Wasn't going to happen.

I agree, Fifi's owners should have taken full responsibility
