Good night all,

I hope this thread as not been created already, so I am just asking some general questions, so please bear with me.

My husband and I (both in our late 20's) are planning to move to Palmetto, Florida or Tampa, Florida. We saw a new housing development built in 2013 that have several units for sale. We were wondering if anyone has opinions on these areas and what we should avoid? And what is available to us in the area? We are looking to start a family soon and we want to have a good school district, low crime rate and good surroundings.

Any other additional information will be greatly appreciated.

Thank you.

If you're looking for low crime you definitely picked the wrong areas. I always got the heeby-jeebies driving through Palmetto (I know there are some good areas, albeit secluded), and Tampa, just like any bigger city, is going to have a higher crime rate. Have you looked at St. Pete? I am from Sarasota but I would say St. Pete is probably a nicer place for a young family... Sarasota is primarily wealthy retirees. My favorite thing about St. Pete is their downtown; unlike Sarasota, they reserved their waterfront downtown area for parks and museums! In Sarasota, if you want to see the ocean from downtown, you either need to climb a condo tower or you can go to the Marina. St. Pete has tons of museums, parks, beautiful old neighborhhoods, and nightlife too. In fact, if you look at the local entertainment publications, there are more events listed in St. Pete than in Tampa. Something to do before you start that family

Be aware, Florida's school system is not the best. Do your research ahead of time to find the best magnet or charter school (we have lots of good ones) and sign your kids up when they're born!

I agree, downtown St. Pete is beautiful. We frequently travel to downtown St. Pete for events held in the parks there. Most of the residential properties in the downtown area are pricey condos. When you get a little further away from the downtown area around the parks......

When relocating to any area, it always pays to do as much research as possible. There is a Tampa - St Pete forum on c-d that may give you more insight into St. Pete.

Hello people.

I am back, been pretty busy and trying to get experience from Tampa residents or persons that have been going there for business and/or who has visited there. So far, I am hearing Tampa as a lot of rednecks and is not totally fun to do a lot of stuff. I live in Miami now, and I would like somewhere not necessarily fast paced, but relatively moderate, so we can raise our family and make a decent living and not worry about crime and/or harassment. It isn't readily easy for me to take a drive up that side anytime soon, so I am in desperate need of help and what we can do, in the mean time.

Really appreciate all the help that you can provide.

Thanks.

in reading the OPs post they asked about palmetto fl. last i checked that was in manatee county. also the last i checked this forum covers manatee and sarasota counties.

just disregard comments like "If you want information on Tampa, post this in the Tampa forums" the person is just plain rude and on a power trip.

OP - hopefully someone will answer your question about palmetto
