We are looking into retiring to Florida, I will be retiring from teaching in the next few years and would still like to substitute teach a few days a week. Is there a need for subs in the local school systems?

We have a few neighbors in our neighborhood who substitute in nearby Manatee County schools.

Here is the link for Sarasota County Schools - Sarasota County Schools - Human Resources

They don't usually post substitute positions this time of year, but you can go online and fill out the application and get all of your materials in. They require background check, fingerprinting, references, etc. You will also have to go through the required training prior to becoming a sub. They need subs each year. You could sign up at Manatee or Charlotte County schools too, just depending where you would be living and which schools would be closer to you. I substitute taught in both Sarasota and Charlotte County. Sarasota paid higher.

I have a teaching degree from NY but never really used it so I started subbing (a little) at Braden River Elementary and McNeal Elementary, the two schools my wife was working at during that same time period. I had just become an agent, had lots of free time, and was possibly thinking about teaching again.

At that time, they paid $15/hr. and you could be called for either a half day or a whole day. I have to say I enjoyed it and the kids were great. Ultimately, I stopped because I was busier but I can see a retired teacher enjoying it. Once the school and teachers know you and like you, they can request you. At least, back then they could.

My wife (still at McNeal) mentioned to me once that they had cut back on subs but that might have been temporary due to budgeting or it might have been related to unavailability of subs. Not sure which and bot sure what next year will bring but I'd encourage you to look into.
