Did you read what I said? You're not processing the information correctly, I don't think.

Are you going to be able to afford a house in Sarasota as a restaurant server or hotel front desk associate? Of course not. Housing in the city of Sarasota is not for minimum-wage earners. You're going to need to drive a ways to find more affordable housing. You know what? Every metro area has sections of town or certain cities where housing costs are high, and people need to go one or two towns over to find more affordable housing. That doesn't make Sarasota "sorrysota" - it just happens to be the town in the area with the highest housing costs. You can't bash it for that, you just need to look a little farther out. This is exactly what I wrote in detail, if you choose to read my whole post.

You don't think a bunch of rich people with money to spend is going to help the economy? Yes, it may largely be going toward lower-wage jobs, but there's also a lot of business managers and owners of those companies that are making living wages and yes, even socking away some retirement funds.

So take the town for what it is. This area has a lot of wealthy retirees, with the tradeoffs and benefits that come with it. But that doesn't mean there's not jobs and regular folks making a living here too. Not every city in the country is going to be the perfect blend of everything for everyone. You can't choose to live in a higher-end city then complain it's not affordable for a lower-end wage earner, when there are plenty of alternatives very close by.
