Hi all,
My family will spend about 1 week in the gulf coast next week, I saw from other sites long time ago that there are shark tooth fossils along the Venice beach area and I think that would be interesting for my two 11 years old daughters. I am wondering if anyone here actually found some and where is the best place for us to find them if there is any.
Thanks.

Best chances of finding teeth would be at low tide.

Presently many of the beaches on the Gulf (Venice, Manasota, Englewood, ect) are in extremely bad condition due to the effects of an unprecedented Red Tide which has been made worse by the releases of toxic water from Lake O. There are massive fish kills and horrible smell- not safe at all for people or especially children. Check some of the local pages for reports on what the people who are actually living here are seeing and experiencing. Red Tide Watch is a good facebook page for up to date information.

Many people are cancelling their vacations and those who don't are regretting not having done so.

Highly recommend cancelling or going somewhere else. Otherwise, go to Manatee county beaches, not Sarasota county. It'll be a bit of a drive, depending on where you are staying, but worth it. But there are no shark teeth on Manatee county beaches.

The way the wind was blowing, you could smell dead fish 1 mile inland.

Check here for local beach red tide report and beach conditions

thank you all, i didn't realize this red tide going on in florida, and looks pretty bad...
now my questions is where should i go in Florida? our plan was drive south from tampa to key largo, (stop at sarasota, fort myer, sanibel beach, everglade np..) and back to fort lauderdale to catch our cruise on 8/12. is the whole gulf coast is bad? if its really bad, can you guys recommend a few places to do/ go? I know it's going to be hot in florida but fortunately this is the only time the kids have a long break from school...
thanks again!!!

It seems Anna Maria Island (just North of Bradenton) is fine...no Red Tide, and kids love it there. Anywhere South of that is a potential problem.

If I were you, and I had to catch a boat in Lauderdale, I'd visit the East Coast instead, and skip this side this year.

You could also cross the state and check out St Augustine. Lots to do there. And then head south on 95.
