I posted this on another thread, but am afraid nobody will see it as this forum moves so darn fast down the page. Lots and lots of folks want to move or retire there it seems. Good for Florida!
Well, I have come to the conclusion that Florida would be my best bet, also.

So, here is my question, since the real estate laws have changed relatively recently and I know little about them so far:

When I get there I plan to purchase most likely a 2-bedroom condo. I will sign up for homesteading asap like I did in Texas when I purchased a place there.
I plan to make Florida my home for the balance of the rest of my life at this point. And I will be a permanent voting, tax-paying, legal driver in the State of Florida so quickly as I can.**
**If it makes any difference, I AM 65 y.o. right now, so I'll take any Sr. discounts available, too. And I plan to pay in cash for whatever I purchase instead of carrying a note if that makes any difference, also.

My question is: Will I lose out on the SOH or any tax deals because I am a totally "new" resident of Florida????
And, if so, how long will it take for me to make up these loses? In other words, after 10 years I will be equal to other old time residents, for example?

I keep reading that new residents of Florida are at such a tremendous disadvantage.

I am not sure you lose anything - you may, but I am at a loss.
You can declare your residency here right away, have your SS checks sent to your new address, and declare for the homestead exemption as soon as you arrive.

I haven't hear of anything that says you don't get X because you haven't been a resident long enough. My brother gets all of his discounts and other things. He has never mentioned any thing negative about Florida - I'm going to see him later today and I'll ask him. He doesnt' seem to have any concerns.

In TX where the poster is coming from there is only a specific time when you can apply for homestead exemption--
if you buy house after that date you have to wait until the next year's application period
